634. Edgemeade of Virginia

Edgemeade of Virginia was a treatment center which closed in 1979. It was related to Edgeemade of Maryland, located near Fairland, which were mentioned in a serial rape case as late as in 2012. A former student wrote:

My name is Dave h.. I was in edgemeade of va during those years.. I remember Henry and Vj, house parent Joan, Ralph Waldron, richie Williams, Cindy mouncey, Fred green, Tyrone sheard, Minnie the cook, Larry Potts, “Luv him”.. Irving, Yvette Daniels, Robin, jr Mitchell, Doug vess, Johnny Reyes, Kathy Campbell, David Dahl, (poor soul), Esther from admin building, dr.dinnwiddie, nyna the cleaning lady, And of course that dam I.C.U. Under the admin. Ran away from there in 78 or 79, with Ed craigar, tony Cassidy, and myself,, after we came Out of a drug induced sedation when they forgot to shoot us up,, Escaped, and the adventure began.. Everything from gunfights to bikers to cops, Stolen horses and motorboats and ended up in TONS of trouble,, Made the wanted list. But it was all because it was either that or keep letting them turn us Into zombies.. Among other things that happened. “Yule Hunt” who is now I think “Sheriff Hunt” was one of two cops that believed our story about what we endured And why we did what we did.. Hunt and his partner “detective Jim Crook” have investigated the place A couple times before. From what I understand.. Our adventure was the beginning of the end of edgemeade.. But what I’ve said here is just the tiny tip of a Huuuuuge iceberg.. But Larry Potts the singing preacher was the one that I would Luv to find, if he’s still alive. I’m a professional musician of caliber because of his kindness and patience.. And musical guidance. Went back there a few years ago in my travels.. It’s pretty much torn apart and the dorms We’re rotting away in what’s now a field. The main house remains and is lived in by a family.. I talked to their neighbor, Had to tell him that the bullet holes in the house were not from the civil war as they believed.. But rather from that incident from our escape.. I heard Dean Brailey was accidentally shot,, But I don’t know.. Tony, Ed, and me were sent to some real hardcore bad places to be held till They figured out what to do with us. We all were separated and never saw each other again. I heard Ed went to s. Hampton, And tony was sent to a place I can’t remember.. And there’s waaaay too much to say at one sitting, Because life turned into an inescapable nightmare for yeeaarrs after that. Found myself buried in an extremely violent world where survival with sanity still intact Was a looong battle. If you’d like to talk some.. Get back to me thru this And maybe we can chat. Would Luv to hear from someone who knows edgemeade.. Was beginning to think I imagined it all.. Seems like all info on it was wiped off the planet.. I’m in Florida keys at moment and make my living in music and teaching wilderness survival. Hope to hear from u.. ;-]

434. Daarul Fajri School

Daarul Fajri School was or is located in Qordho, Puntland, Somalia. For reasons unknown the parents of 17-year-old Ammar Abdihamid Abdirahman decided to sent him to Somalia to learn about his culture despite the fact that he was born in the United States and was supposed to live a life based on Facebook, spring breaks, MTV etc. and whatever healthy teenagers do.

For not so many years it was normal for immigrants to alter their names and make them American when they entered the United States. It was a decision of building a future for both themselves and their children. In order to do that properly the old culture must go.

Anyhow, he ended up in Somalia and being the country Somalia is he was killed and none was really taken to justice. He was killed for free and none of the locals cared. There were witnesses. Still no investigation.

To make matters worse his mother became under pressure from people who took interest in removing children from safety and exposing them to what looks very much like boarding schools run by extremists.

The whole setup looks suspicious. Someone have something to hide and it is certainly not something his parents must have suspected when they sent him there.

It doesn’t sound like a fun place to be when you are a teenager born into a totally other culture.

324. Saving Youth Foundation

Justice finally caught up with the management of a Christian Boot camp in Mobile, Alabama

Years ago we wrote about a similar boot camp also in Alabama called Restoration Youth Academy also located in Alabama. After we wrote about the facility they got some unwanted attention from the local media and they decided to close their operations.

It turned out to be a trick enabling them to open under a new name.

Ordinary families who sought help for their children gave them to people who shackled their teenagers and isolated them in small boxes as punishment being lured by a website promising counseling and therapy.

Fortunately the authorities intervened and several arrests have been made.

It is time that the people behind such scams which includes a history back to infamous places like Bethel Boys Academy etc. can be stopped.

It could not be a fun place to be as a teenager.

265. Shortridge Academy

Shortridge Academy was founded by a former student from CEDU who wanted to re-create the same kind of enclosed boarding school he went to.

A couple of years a documentary about CEDU and the long-term emotional damages this program inflicted on its former students was put on. As result enrollment at the CEDU-clone schools dropped. A parent to a student at Shortridge Academy writes:

This school was an utter disapointment. Enrollment has fallen to the point where there are now only about 20 kids at the school, and there is an absolute lack of resources and staff to accomplish what they represent they will do for the kids. The staff is augmented by half trained college students. My child arrived at this school from a wilderness school, and he was an absolute joy. Now, after almost a year he has regressed to being disobedient and defiant. All through this time I was told to just wait, that my child could be helped, and that my child was the perfect student. After about $100k I’ve come to recognize that none of this is true. There has not been any perceptible improvement in behavior or attitude. I feel as though I’ve been defrauded. I don’t know if other theraputic boarding schools have better results, but this one failed in every respect for me and my child. Sorry. Just my honest opinion.
