876. Brookside School for Maladjusted Children in Shropshire

The Brookside School for Maladjusted Children in Shropshire was a school used by the authorities as an exile for children who had case files taking up time for case workers in the social services system.

At the school close to 100 children were subjected to rape and abuse. Most survivors mention former head master Jack Mount. Among the victims were children aged down to 10.

Why the authorities never managed to bring the head master to justice for his actions is a rather complicated legal question which is impossible to answer.

But the emotional scars, he inflicted on the children does not require any legal advice for us to understand. That burden is hard to bear through life.

Hopefully such places will be subjected to close supervision in the future so these awful things would not repeat itself. It could not have been fun to be there as a child.

866. Gordonstoun School

The Gordonstoun School has the infamous reputation that it inspires the concept of wilderness therapy in the United States which is a concept which have claimed the lives of many teenagers. The founder Kurt Hahn had a misguided vision of what modern people can endure

Beside that Gordonstoun School is also know as a place where rape and child abuse took place. Prince Charles did apparently not remember the school for many good memories but at least he had personal to ensure his safety so he did not fall victim for some of the more cruel things which happened to other students.

It is safe to say that the school for some was not a fun place to be as a teenager.

862. Wolston Park Hospital

The Wolston Park Hospital located in Queensland housed mentally ill between the 1950’s and 1980’s. Reports in local media mention the children were exposed to repeated rapes, sexual assaults – by both staff and adult patients – torture, chemical restraints, cigarette burns, fear, isolation and degrading humiliation.

Today it is known as The Park Centre for Mental Health – hopefully it is managed in a different way.

It is safe to state that it could not have been fun to be there as a child.

854. St Joseph’s Boys School

The facility also going under names as St Joseph’s College and St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill is located near Sydney in Australia. It was established in 1881. For many years is was very closed connected to a Catholic Religious Institute of Brothers called Marist Brothers.

Recently articles about abuse which took place while the school had close connections to the brotherhood appeared. Testimonies were given before the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. A former brother was convicted but most of the alleged abusers had died at the time of the hearing.

It could not have been fun to be victim to the abuse committed by some of the brothers back then.

843. Eliada Children’s Home

Children at the Eliada Children’s Home has been removed by the state authorities. Their license were suspended meaning that the children must be removed to protect their safety.

An article mentions that three children were reported injured in “serious occurrences” in the facility over just one weekend.

Furthermore in a three-month span from November 2018 through January 2019, documents say, there were 81 cases of Eliada employees using “restrictive interventions” with clients. That is a clear sign that the employees were not trained to talk to the children in a way where such actions could be prevented.

It could not be fun to have been placed at the facility as a teenager.

840. The Youth Development Center in Manchester

The Youth Development Center in Manchester also named the John H. Sununu Youth Services Center is in the news due to the investigation into the actions of so-far two former counselors who has been charged with repeatedly raping a teenage boy in the 1990’s. Dozen of former victims have stepped forward.

While a youth detention facility is punishment, the punishment should never include rape. We can only hope that the victims are able to ask for a compensation using a private lawsuit against the state, which should have ensured that this form of abuse could not take place.

Today the detention center is known as: Sununu Youth Services Center

It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager during the periode described in articles.

833. The Gow School

The Gow School came to the attention of the media when alleged victims of abuse stepped forward and ended what was silence after the alleged rapes conducted by an English teacher. Stress due to the alleged rape has meant difficulties for the victims to move forward in life.

The school made their own investigation instead of handing the matter over the police. The school concluded that the circumstances no longer were present in 2002. However the incidents, the former students made aware off, took place before this year.

So it could have been likely that the abuse took place and that is why it is odd that the school chooses to investigate a later period.

823. Revival Church Kawaala

Being a 15 year old looking for answers regarding religion, it would not be the best choice to go to Revival Church Kawaala. A young woman did and as result she was raped, she claimed. A lot of investigations were pending against the church but with the death of Pastor Augustine Yiga, only the future will show if the problems were due to him or the church in general.

However it is safe to state that it could not have been fun to be there as a teenager.

789. New Lisbon State School

Today the facility is called New Lisbon Developmental Center. Beside New Lisbon State School other names were used “Four Mile Colony”, “Colony for Boys” and Vineland State School.

Today 2 boys remains missing: Steven Eugene Anderson and David Williams has not been found. Foul play has not been established but then again. Without any trace of them, who might know what happened to them.

Back in the day abuse took place at the facility. Rapes took place. It must have been an awful place. At some point the authorities decided to change that but when it happened, I have not been able to find out.

It could not have been fun to be there as a child.

752. Woodlands care home (for children)

Woodlands care home was located on Dereham Road in Norwich. It housed children of different age. Among the employees were Joseph Douglas Hewitt who in 1995 was convicted of sexual assault and rape involving six children. Strangely none seem to ask who were responsible for the oversight of the care home and why they failed the children.

Based on articles in the media it is safe to conclude that it could not have been fun to be a child at the care home.
