826. Pillars of Hope

Pillars of Hope was a boarding school operating under the WWASP franchise. It was created after Academy at Dundee Ranch, which were located on the same address, was raided by the authorities.

Former students speak of schools in the franchise as private run prisons. It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager.

641. Wellspring Academy

Wellspring Academy in Sutherlin, Virginia was closed in 2003. The owner Bob Gluhareff shot himself after he was sentenced to prison

A local newspaper wrote:

And Bob Gluhareff, who had headed the now defunct Wellspring Academy in the Sutherlin community for disturbed youth, was sentenced to 30 months in jail and ordered to pay $500,000 in restitution. The sentencing came after Gluhareff had been charged with 53 counts of tax, wire, mail and bank fraud back in 2006. However, earlier this year, he had pleaded guilty to two charges of bank fraud and one each to mail and tax fraud.

It is safe to say based on the ruling in the court that it could not have been fun to be there as a teenager.

617. Marland School

When Marland School was a private run incidents took place which now years later has resulted in conviction of Steven John Joyce. He uses his position as “House parent” to groom on boys who lived at the school.

After an appeal his sentence was set to 14 years.

It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager when he was house parent.

534. Camelot Education

Camelot Education provides special education services in Pennsylvania.

In order to do that they have created a structured environment. However teenagers find that the structured enviroment resembles prisons. Two employees where charged with violence and alleged cover-up of troublesome incidents. One employee went to prison.

It doesn’t sound like a fun place to be as a teenager.

448. Gøgereden

The group home Gøgereden (Cuckoo’s Nest) located in the northern part of Jutland had a cottage on the remote island Læsø they used to isolate girls placed in their care by the social services in Denmark.

One of counselors had sex with one of the girls. Normally the courts wouldn’t take the word for it but the girl had kept a secret recording of a confession made by the counselor. She also hit sperm from the man after the intercourse.

The counselor was sentenced to 60 days in prison. After a retrial the verdict was confirmed but the prison sentence was suspended. It was quiet a remarkble verdict as the system in Denmark looks down on children placed in the system.

It could not have been fun to be at the group home as a teenager.

397. Waimokoia School

The Waimokoia School in New Zealand was founded in 1981 and closed in 2010.

An investigation into sexual assault resulted in closure of the facility. An employee was later sentenced to prison. Later the property was sold

It doesn’t sound like a fun place to be as a teenager.

390. Heart of Worship Community Church group home

A group home belonging the Heart of Worship Community Church in Corona, California became the center of an investigation into child abuse. Several members of the church including the Pastor named Lonny Lee Remmers was involved in the abuse which ended several of them in prison. A police officer who also was a church member didn’t report the child abuse and was fired from the police force after serving 24 years.

It didn’t sound like a nice place to be as a teenager.

378. Extended Family Services youth center, Spanish Fork, Utah

It is not enough to instruct your employees when you are working with vulnerable children. You have to ensure that the instructions are followed and employees who don’t follow these instructions are disciplined and even fired.

The management of Extended Family Services youth center in Spanish Fork, Utah neglected this and it led to a case where an employee was charged with alleged sexual relationship with two girls. The employee was sentenced to prison.

For a teenager to have fun at a place outside home, structure and rules should be followed. It was not the case at this group home. It placed the girls in danger.

227. Explorations wilderness program

The Explorations wilderness program is located in Trout Creek, Montana.

The program is marketed as a wilderness program. It is not known how parents bring their children to this program but some kind of approach the program uses instill a kind of anger in the children. Fact is that two runaways attacked a woman and she was unable to return to her normal work as result of this attack.

The two teenagers got years in prison for their act so the minor problems they were sent to the program to have fixed turned out to become much worse and now their future is gone.

It is safe to state that it cannot be fun to be at this program as a teenager. Otherwise such anger would never have been the result.

Parents who feared that their children were going down the wrong path could get in contact with now-former police officer Geoffrey Townsend who then would help them or at least so the parents believed.

In reality he was helping himself and for this the court gave him 10 to 15 years in prison because he used girls in the program for his own best.

It didn’t sound like a fun place to be as a teenager.
