860. Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health

The chain of treatment facilities was found by Helena T. Devereux in 1912. The Devereux organization established their Texas department in 1959 and it is one out of many departments across the United States.

Searching on the facility articles speak of possible sexual attack on children and riots. An article points out that the management was not observant enough setting up guidelines which could have prevented these incidents.

Feedback from former patients on Google is not that positive

I use to live here. They played favoritism. When it was time for prom they told us if you walk out of school or anywhere else you will not attend prom but that was a lie. The counselors never cared. Never listened to you. I cant wait to show up one day to surprise everyone. Cause this place needs to be shut down. After me and another client left me and her still talked i told her i was pregant and told me someone from Devereux could take care of my baby. Umm what? The baby would have a better life. I miscarried. But for staff to still be connected with residents is a little disturbing. This place is not worth it. Dont come here EVER!

Horrible communication good luck getting any information after spending 3 days calling leaving messages and never getting a callback I tried the number my insurance company provided and spoke to a super rude disgruntled employee who informed me they were long term not short term(1-2months inpatient) facility which is NOT clearly stated on their website. If the initial intake is this incompetent I can’t imagine how services could be

779. Phillips Academy

The Phillips Academy in Massachusetts used an employee who also worked parttime at the infamous Boston Childrens Hospital best known in the public for the Pelletier case. The employee was convicted of child pornography charges.

The school had received complaints over the actions of the employee for a number of years and decided not to renew the contract hoping that it all just would go away quietly. It did not. The police started an investigation after findings on the Internet.

The school stated

John Palfrey, the head of school at Phillips Academy, also had said in an email to students and parents after Keller’s arrest that the decision to not renew Keller’s contract was based on professional misconduct unrelated to the federal case. Palfrey said Keller had been reprimanded in 1999 for using a school computer to access adult pornography and had shown an inappropriate cartoon to students in 2002.

The questions remain if parents should believe that story. We doubt that it could be a fun place to be as a teenager.

778. Milton Academy

Restless Virgins is a book inspired by an incident which took place at this boarding school in Massachusetts. Some might ask why the school did not take precautions to prevent a number boys from having sex with a single girl under circumstances where the girls might have felt pressured into performing the act. Maybe because the culture at the school was bad and corrupted due to a number of boys having become victim of a teacher named Buono.

This toxic environment resulted in humiliating treatment of a girl and the responsability of that is with the school management.

It could not have been fun to be there as a student.

701. Eliot Atlantic House

The idea for this place is serve adolescents children and adolescents referred by the Department of Child and Family Services. Our homes offer comprehensive residential treatment and intensive clinical services focused on preparing youth to return home or to transition into an alternative structured, therapeutic or independent living situation.

It sound very fine, but the type of job a counselor suggested to guide girls forwards independent living was criminal. Selling their bodies can hardly be legal. It does not sound as a fun place to be as a teenager.

620. Adams Memorial Junior High School

The Adams Memorial Junior High School also known as Adams Memorial Middle School which is now closed has been the center of a recent investigation due to possible child abuse conducted in 1970’s.

A school custodian used his job to lure on the boys when they were in the showers. Some boys were also invited to the school during the holidays when the school was closed. The abuser confirmed his actions and told investigators that he lost his job as result of his actions.

However strangely enough there are no records showing how he lost his job. The abuse was not reported. The questions remain: Who covered up the incidents? Why was there not a police investigation as result of his loss of his job? If he got fired because of his improper relationship to the boys, other employees and his manager should have reported him.

It cannot be fun to have been there being a victim of the school custodian actions.

575. Devereux School

The Devereux School is located in Rutland, Massachusetts. An officer was fired for hitting a student. Former residents speak of restraints as punishment. Former employees complain of lack of payment and overtime.

It cannot be fun to be there as a teenager.

479. Boston Children’s Hospital

Today Boston Children’s Hospital is mostly known outside the United States for the Justina Pelletier. The teenage girl was treated and diagnosed by the Tufts Medical Center when she was admitted to the hospital during a vacation. Here the hospital out of the blue suddenly second-guessed the diagnose the medical center had found.

When her parent protested the new diagnose stopping treatment of the original illness out of fear of the possibility of a worsen health the hospital went to the courts and the parents lost guardianship so the hospital could have their newfound guinea pig for themselves putting the poor through exhausting therapy.

Finally the judge discovered his mistake and reverted the guardianship to the parents. Since her return home she has been through surgery.

This case caught the attention of the media mostly because her parents had the strength to approach them. What if there are several others who go through therapy against their will?

It cannot be fun to be there as a teenager if you are held there against your will.

460. The Grove

This now-closed residential treatment facility has recently been in the media due to a alleged rape-case. While the prosecution didn’t prove their case, the question arise whether the facility had guidelines which ensured the moral safety of both employees and the youth forced to live there.

The question not asked in the court was why the management didn’t ensure that an employee never should be alone with a vulnerable youth. It is clear that these lack of guidelines and rules placed both the youth and the employee in a situation where one of them would be hurt in the end.

It could not have been fun to stay at this facility.

449. Eagleton School

The police has made arrests in connection with an investigation into child abuse related to the Eagleton School in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

While none have been convicted and the shool is rather old and is considered to have a good reputation locally, reviews made by former employees speak of high turnover of employees and a management with little control over the daily life.

Taking into consideration that the approach taken in connection with children suffering from autism and Asperger syndrome needs to be very structured a messy approach is bound to cause trouble and then a child can be hurt in the process.

It doesn’t sound like a fun place to be teenager when the employees are not following common known guidelines in connection with the challenges the teenagers face based on their illness.

422. Groton School

Groton School in Massachusetts was the center of an investigation into abuse conducted by older students against younger students. The school failed to report the abuse to the authorities. They were fine. They apologied to the victims.

It is not certain which procedures they have introduced to prevent this from happening again but it is certain that it could not have been fun to be there as a teenager while the abuse was ongoing.
