898. Northwoods Academy

Northwoods Academy is the Bibb County School District’s early childhood learning center opened in 2009. It services families with special-need children and the website of the school speaks about about a good environment for the children.

However an article from 2016 paints another picture about what is going on at the school. Violence against the students. It is not in line with what the website promises.

It cannot be fun to be there as a special-need student.

894. Presbyterian Children’s Village

Now called “TheVillage” so it does not pop up on Search engines when people look for awful incidents in the past, the facility was involved in placing a child in an abusive foster home, had to fire a teacher for sleeping with one of the children and had to involve the police when a fight took place on campus.

It does not sound like a fun place to be as a teenager. In fact one of the person who were placed there as a child wrote on Reddit.

Hi. I just found this subreddit. As a teenager, I spent a year a Presbyterian Children’s Village (PCV) because I was a sad kid in an abusive home with no where else to go. I have a lot of mixed feelings about my experience there. It has created some trauma of its own that I’ve found hard to process. Here are my experiences.

Sometimes I feel like I’m being petty because my experiences aren’t as bad as they could have been. I had a lot of trauma going into PCV, but I was always treated as if I was crazy and my trauma was not real. This really messed me up. I got singled out a lot in groups by the house Staff as having a good home life, despite the fact that I was there because my parents couldn’t care for me. None of my personal information was ever private. The house staff would share everything with the other kids in the house. Having no privacy had a big impact, because kids will use that against you. I think the house staff knew that too. Theft was also a big issue. And it wasn’t just the other kids. The staff would often steal from me. Everything I owned got stolen at some point. I also had a really hard time at night time. Kids would jump you in the middle of the night and the staff didn’t really care. It’s taken me a long time to process this experience. It was supposed to be therapeutic, but at the end it created more issues for me. It was an environment where nobody believed me and where I was always a liar. I was always presumed to be bad and if something happened, it didn’t matter because I was a throwaway kid.We were all treated as throwaways. I felt like the general feeling was that we weren’t going to be anything. It was like they were preparing us to be criminals and nothing more. That’s always stuck with me and caused me a lot of pain.

In 2008 newspapers in both Spain and Denmark reported about an arrest of a Danish captain who commandeered a ship with troubled youth. The reason of the arrest was abandoning a teenager on the island of Islote de Lobos. Marooning is an ancient form of punishment which had not been used in recent decades. The Island while not having any permanent inhabitants were guarded by some officials and by pure luck the boy was picked out. He was not dressed to a life on his own.

The Spanish authorities were shocked by the discovery and arrested the Dane responsible for the act.

In Denmark an inquest was conducted by protected by the social services who had referred the boys to the program but nothing happened as it properly would have embarrassed the case workers who referred the children to the program for not investigating properly what the public funds was use for.

It could not have been fun to be there when they use punishments like this.

The Chennai shools offer top education but they run their schools allowing system of shaming and attract teachers who exploit the unsecure teenagers and some of the teenagers take sexual advantages of the teenage students.

As result many of the students felt that it was their fault that the teachers touched them in an inappropriate way and in some cases even went further.

Now former students call for a reform.

Until this has happened it is safe to say that it cannot be fun to be there as a teenager.

881. Meadowlark Academy (II)

This facility is located near Cheyenne in Wyoming. It is not to be confused with the academy of same name in Kansas. It is owned by an organization named “Rite of Passage”.

The structure of this program is not known. It seems that it very much functions as a group home instead of a full-blown behavior modification program with levels and isolation.

In 2021 there was a high profiled escape attempt. An employee was also arrested on charges of felony Child Abuse. It cannot be a fun place to be as a teenager.

The Youth Development Center in Manchester also named the John H. Sununu Youth Services Center is in the news due to the investigation into the actions of so-far two former counselors who has been charged with repeatedly raping a teenage boy in the 1990’s. Dozen of former victims have stepped forward.

While a youth detention facility is punishment, the punishment should never include rape. We can only hope that the victims are able to ask for a compensation using a private lawsuit against the state, which should have ensured that this form of abuse could not take place.

Today the detention center is known as: Sununu Youth Services Center

It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager during the periode described in articles.

810. Boarding schools in the town of Dehradun, India

The police is now investigating all the boarding schools in the town of Dehradun, India after several incidents shocked the community. A 9-year-old boy was allegedly molested by an adult who should look after the boy due to the Covid-19 lockdown which prevented his parents from getting him.

The incident is one among several reported from Dehradun’s boarding schools in the last few years, including gang-rape of a class-10 girl by fellow students and the murder of a 7-year-old class-3 student by his seniors.

It seems that staying at boarding schools in this town cannot be fun as a child.

808. Dilworth School

Dilworth School is now known for the police investigation into alleged abuse where the charges against several men include sexual violation, attempted sexual violation, indecency and indecent assault.

At this point it remains unclear when the abuse started and when if it stopped, in fact stopped.

Most of the men arrested are aged between 60 and 70 which means that they properly do not work with children anymore. However question remains if the past management knew and if they decided to let the employees go instead of reporting it.

What is safe to say at this point is that it could not have been fun to be there as a teenager.
