617. Marland School
When Marland School was a private run incidents took place which now years later has resulted in conviction of Steven John Joyce. He uses his position as “House parent” to groom on boys who lived at the school.
After an appeal his sentence was set to 14 years.
It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager when he was house parent.

1000 places You don't want to be as a teenager 
I went to this school from 1989 to 1991, and other than a bit of ribbing by staff, I never had a problem there.
I seem to remember Mr Joyce having a reputation (from other kids) for being ‘a bit creepy’, but it would appear I evaded his attention… and I don’t remember seeing any evidence of his criminal behaviour when I was there.
This isn’t too surprising because I was a quite verbal and open person, so I probably couldn’t be relied upon on keep a ‘secret’… and perverts like Joyce rely on people who can keep their secrets.
I’m glad he went to prison for his crimes.
It’s worth pointing out that a single abuser can spoil the reputation of a good school.
Almost 30 years later, I have many good memories from my time there.
I was at Marland as one of it’s first 12 pupils transferred from Heanton School until 1968 and can confirm abuse was rife by staff I am happy to name if an appropriate body wishes to contact me.
One staffer regularly joined the boys in the shower, soaped himself up and gave practical demonstrations of keeping genitals clean, ” helping ” boys who weren’t doing it to his standards. Mr. B.
A short, Scottish staffer had a Thames Camper Van and took boys out in groups for games of his own perversion. I met this creature in 1973, working in a Herts County Council Childrens Home in Welwyn Garden City. When I confronted him, he denied being the same Mr. T. H.
Although I remained un-touched by staff, I saw enough to affect me to this day. My parents weren’t made aware of why I flatly refused to return in 1968.
Mr. Williams was replaced as the original Head by John Horner.
Bearded Mr. Gerrish was Deputy and a real mentor to me. I don’t implicate them in my allegations.
I would very much like to hear from any pupil who knew me in that era, particularly Bernard Melson.

Yes there is my partner went there after you and what sicken me is that he was sent there whist this abuse was clearly going on it’s disgusting makes me so angry
