618. Jehovah’s Witnesses in Canada

This problem is currently under investigation in Canada but could sadly apply to Jehovah’s Witnesses in other countries too. The problem is that the religion allows a parallel court system to function instead of involving the police from the very start and let them investigate when sexual child abuse occur.

The children should be allowed to report their abusers to the police. They should be allowed to get real justice and see that their abusers go to prison. This religion robs the children of justice.

It cannot be fun to be part of what we will call a cult as long as they do not give up their internal court system and bring conflicts to the official courts to be solved.

617. Marland School

When Marland School was a private run incidents took place which now years later has resulted in conviction of Steven John Joyce. He uses his position as “House parent” to groom on boys who lived at the school.

After an appeal his sentence was set to 14 years.

It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager when he was house parent.

616. Children’s Receiving Home

The Children’s Receiving Home in Sacramento has since 2012 been investigated by the authorities. Among the points of interest in the investigation were poorly trained staff, mishandled medications and filthy dorms.

An employee had an improper relationship with a child. The dorms continue to be filthy to such a degree that the inspectors cannot stand how it smells inside the dorms when they inspect the facility.

Still it remains in operation.

We are asking. How much should it take before such places are closed down?

It cannot be fun to be there as a child.

615. Metropolitan Boys’ Shelter

Metropolitan Boys’ Shelter was a youth holding prison for underaged boys who were awaiting trial. It was in operation from 1911 to 1983. It was also known as “Metropolitan Boys’ Remand Home” and “Albion Street Shelter”.

In 2017 the police started an investigation into possible abuse. It was known as a harsh place. Now it has been established that the treatment guided several boys into a life of crime. Some even ended up as murderers.

It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager.

614. El Pueblo Boys & Girls Ranch

El Pueblo Boys & Girls Ranch has it license suspended after state investigators found that the children were underfed and abuse. The facility had been in operation for more than 50 years. It seems that the decision to close the place was done 50 years too late.

It cannot be fun to have been there as a teenager.

613. Teglgårdslund

Teglgårdslund is located in Hilleroed. They offer apartments for at-risk youth aged between 15 and 26 years with so-called easy problems.

In the past there was a case where a 15 year old girl tried to burn her apartment down. There were also involved in connecting the previous entry “Vildmarksprojektet” with the authorities despite missing licensing and a totally illegal concept. They neglected to interview the children when they returned from Norway and Sweden. Letters from foster families in Sweden containing information about violence comitted against the teenagers were ignored.

Despite having changed management we as a human rights group doubt that there have been changes enough so we will claim that it cannot be fun to be there as a teenager.

612. Vildmarken kalder aka vildmarksprojektet

“Vildmarken kalder” also known as Vildmarksprojektet (In some sources also mentioned as Rejseprojektet) was an illegal residential treatment option used by Danish authorities from around 2005 and some years after. The youth were sent to Norway and placed at remote locations in Sweden and Norway. Regardless that it was against the law to place minors abroad according to Danish legislation several departments of social services made use of this so-called treatment program. The manager had no relevant education. In fact he was trained auto mechanic.

The youth were met with physical violence. No case worker report him for his illegal use of force as they were required to according to Danish law. Neither employees from the treatment program nor case workers have been disciplined for their work and use of this illegal treatment program.

It could not have been a fun place to be as a teenager.

611. Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah

A terrible tragedy struck the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah so-called boarding school in Kuala Lumpur when fire broke out. It is not known why there only was one exit but at other so-called school of similar kind students are forced to attend. In some case some of the students were even forced to wear shackles in order to prevent them from running.

The school was not regulated by the officials and that is a huge security risk. Because it allows the management to design the schools as prisons which are deadly when we talk fires.

The teenagers who died were trapped with no chance of escaping. The windows had bars and of course once the fire blocked the single exit possibility, they could only wait and die.

A terrible loss for their families and the local community in general all because some parents prefer their child to memorize some religious words instead of getting a real education which could have enabled them for a future.

The government should step in and close schools down until they are reconstructed to be more safe in order to prevent future tragedies like this one.

610. Smyllum Park Orphanage

Investigation has shown that the bodies of over 100 children have been buried in a local cemetary. Of course it needs to be taken into consideration that the facility opened back in 1864 and the medical standards were not as high as today.

Still some of the deaths cause concern. Former residents speak of abuse. Were some of the death certificates made without proper investigation into what caused the deaths? It seems so.

It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager.

609. St. John’s Northwest Military Academy


St. John’s Northwest Military Academy is located in Delafield in Wisconsin. There have been lawsuits claiming abuse and lack of control of the students behavior against each other. Basically what most would call poor management.

It cannot be fun to live under such conditions as a teenager.
