540. Wordsworth Academy

The death of 17 year old David Hess prompted an investigation that led to the closure of Wordsworth Academy. Why did it require a death before the authorities reacted? Wasn’t 49 sex crimes enough? We were talking 12 rapes and 23 accounts of sexual abuse.

Anyhow it is now closed and it is safe to say that it could not have been a fun place to be as a teenager.

Paramount Academy is run by Camelot Education (Which has origins from the infamous Brown Schools which closed around 2005 due to upcoming lawsuits which would have bankrupted them).

It seems that this alternative school is run like a prison and the school district responsible for the operations at the school closed their eyes instead of providing an oversight which could have ensured the safety of the students.

In one incident a police investigation resulted in conviction of two school employees for violence against a student and a try to cover up the incident. The school administration which urged the employees to cover up the violence was not convicted.

It cannot be a fun place to be as a teenager.

Sunhawk Academy was located in St. George, Utah. Today the building are used to house homeless people.

It was marketed as a drug rehab and it could not be a pleasant one as there is a report about a car chase where residents tried to run. In the end it closed and lives now only in the memory of those who were there. Sadly some of those teenagers who survived their ordeal at the place are not among us anymore.

It could not have been a fun place to be as a teenager.

The facility was located near Humholt in Arizona and was believed to be for boys only.

The facility was started by former employees from Copper Canyon Academy – now Sedona Sky Academy. It was not a business who lived for long. A message board mentions that it inherited some of the problems, Copper Canyon Academy suffered from in the start.

It could not have been fun to be there as a teenager.

The facility also going under the names Teen Challenge, Bonifay or West Florida Boys Ranch was the center of an article from Tampa Bay Times.

It is structured somewhat like a boot camp and the relatives of the young boys who are sent there have very little contact.

Also one of the boys ended up in Hospital because they forced him to exercise too much.

It cannot be fun to be there as a teenager.

Runaways, employee serving alcohol to teenagers below 16 and having the wrong kind of relationship with them is the recipe for things turning bad.

It is safe to assume that the teenagers find that it is not a fun place to be as a teenager.

In order to do that they have created a structured environment. However teenagers find that the structured enviroment resembles prisons. Two employees where charged with violence and alleged cover-up of troublesome incidents. One employee went to prison.

This facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky seems to be criticized by parents

My daughter went to the facility 3 times within a month and a half time period. When returning home, she had a UTI, Scabies, and had not shaved nor brushed her teeth the entire time she was there. I’m extremely displeased to have my adolescent child taken there for psychiatric care and come out needing a detox to recover physically. I have joint custody of my daughter and was never contacted about the medications she was using or only once about her recovery. I strongly advise anyone that is having a troubled youth, to reconsider taking their child here. There are many other places to choose from.

Also a now former employee are facing charges due to his alleged improper relationship with one of the patients.

It doesn’t sound like a fun and safe place to be as a teenager.

Buckeye Ranch which is located around Columbus in Ohio. In 2017 the facility came in the news due to a traffic accident which took place after a teenager who ran away from the facility was followed by employees and was hit by a car.

Further investigation revealed that there had been an incident in 2013 where employees were accused of violence against one of the teenagers at the group homes.

Feedbacks from employees on glasdoor and indeed are mixed and speak of employees not being trained so they can talk situations down and avoid being exposed from violence from the children setting up a situation where it is easy to state that it cannot be fun to be there as a teenager.
